BRAM Overview

The BRAM, or Backup RAM, is a small section of memory that resides inside the console itself. On an authentic unit, this is a mere 2KB in size. However, up to 8KB of BRAM could technically be used. The BRAM memory holds things like high score tables, savegames, etc. when the power to the console is switched off. Contrary to popular belief, a battery does not power the BRAM. Instead, a capacitor is used. Capacitors cost less and last virtually forever, but their charge time is rather limited compared to a rechargable battery. This is why NEC suggested powering on the unit at least once every 2 weeks to ensure the charge is maintained.

The Backup RAM is used similar to an ordinary file system.
